About Me

For as far back as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a healer.

Although my career choices changed frequently as an adolescent, I started my freshman year of college at Virginia Commonwealth University on a Pre-med track. Up until that point, I was under the impression that the best way to heal others was by becoming a surgeon. At that time, I believed that doctors and surgeons, were doing the most healing work and I wanted to be a part of it. I was taking all the prerequisites (even took Organic Chemistry twice, but we won’t get into that), and yet something was off. I was learning all the things & comprehending most of it, but the passion just wasn’t there.

Then I enrolled in Psychology 101.

That experience completely changed both my understanding of how the mind works, & my idea of what it means to help others. Everything I learned, convinced me of one thing - that physical health means nothing, if the mind is unwell.

Fast forward and I’m a graduate of Georgia State University’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling Masters program, an Associate Professional Counselor & on my way towards full licensure as a therapist at Push Thru Therapy in Atlanta, Georgia. My passion is minority mental health, with an emphasis on the Black community, and I aim to help eliminate stigma one mind at a time.

Melanated & Misunderstood is an extension of that passion. With weekly posts & original content, I aim to use my knowledge & experience to educate others on the many aspects of mental health & ultimately let people know that it’s okay to ask for help. It’s a safe space, where people who are hurting can begin to heal. This website is an extension of that creation. With blog posts, features from Black creatives & much more, I this is a community of minority individuals, committed to de-stigmatizing mental health for generations to come.

As a newly trained Doula, my aim is to help lower the maternal mortality rate that disproportionately affects Black & Brown folx, by providing not only physical support but mental & emotional as well.
