Depression
Depression or Major Depressive Disorder affects millions of people around the world, showing up differently in each and every one of them. More often than not, depression comes in waves or episodes. These depressive episodes (lasting at least two weeks at a time), not only effect ones’ ability to show up for themselves and others, but it can make it extremely difficult to get through the day. Often there is a feeling of disconnect that causes many to not reach out for help, or even share with someone how their feeling. Within the Black community, stigma around mental illness causes people to believe that they have to get through these episodes on their own. Some may even wear a smile to mask their depression; wanting to avoid a difficult conversation.
While there is no one “look” for depression, there are a few common symptoms.
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION INCLUDE:
Depressed Mood | hopelessness, feeling sad or empty
Significant weight loss/weight gain,
due to decrease or increase in appetite
Anhedonia | lack of interest or pleasure
in things you usually enjoy doing
Hypersomnia/Insomnia | Sleeping too much,
or not at all
Fatigue or loss of energy
Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
Suicidal ideation | recurring thoughts of death or suicide
