Have you ever felt like you didn't belong?

Imposter Syndrome is a feeling of self-doubt or inadequacy that many individuals, especially those in the minority, often experience. It is the state of mind where one doubts their own accomplishments, and fears that others will see them as a fraud or unworthy.

Often times we find it hard to show up in certain spaces because we feel as though we don’t belong. The lack of representation can be discouraging.

Imposter syndrome (also known as imposter phenomenon), is a feeing of self-doubt and inadequacy. Most times it shows up in academic or work spaces and it may leave us feeling anxious or depressed. Being the only Black or Brown face at the table or in a classroom where we are one of few, can cause us to feel like we don’t belong. The pressure to achieve, placed on so many of us by family/society, can often cause us to believe that even when we’re doing our best, it’ll never be enough. The pressure to perform or prove ones’ worth can be stressful and overwhelming; leading to low self-esteem, anxiety or even depression.

3 Tips for overcoming Imposter Syndrome:

  1. Know your worth.
You got to where you are because you’re meant to be there. It may not be forever, but for right now, it is where you belong. Know that and stand in your power.

  2. Affirm yourself.
Sometimes we all just need a reminder of who we are and what we’re capable of. Remind yourself everyday that you are right where you’re supposed to be. Affirmations like “I am enough” or “I am worthy” may help counteract any negative thinking.

  3. Surround yourself with support.
It’s important that the people in your circle encourage and support you, and your accomplishments. Having someone else to validate you can be helpful in overcoming imposter syndrome.

You are enough.

Where you are right now, is where you’re meant to be.

Believe in yourself.
